Editorial Operations Assistant

Summary:

Local TV Ltd., the UK’s leading City TV network, is on the look-out for a sharp, talented and multi-skilled journalist to join the busy central Channels team that’s charged with planning, commissioning and quality controlling output on-air and online 365 days a year. An editorial role at its core, this job is perfect for relatively new entrants to the industry that want to hit the ground running in the fast-paced, challenging and rewarding world of local TV. You’ll work with colleagues across the business, supporting city teams in our eight regions and the Channels department centrally – which comprises the crucial Editorial, Digital and Broadcast teams that get our great content in front of millions!

 Main Purpose of the Job:

The Local TV Ltd. network outputs hours of original news, information and entertainment content each and every day. The Editorial Operations Assistant plays a key role in making sure that content is not only in the right place at the right time, but also that it’s the best possible quality it can be. Our output needs to be broadcast compliant, legally sound, and should always fulfil our broad editorial aim to reflect life as it’s lived in our amazing cities and regions.

A huge portion of the EOA’s role daily is assisting in the quality control and distribution of incoming video files from across the network. Typically working a 10:30am-7:00pm shift, the role is focused towards supporting the editorial teams both locally and centrally in delivering the best possible content. You’ll be helping teams to newsgather, edit and then perfect their output – from sifting through press releases in the morning, helping to record the national news headlines in the studio in the afternoon, to casting a critical eye over our content in the evening before it makes it to air. You’ll spend a lot of time each day using our bespoke Media Asset Management & Deployment software AMP – helping to manage, deploy and analyse successes and failures in editorial video content. Whilst much of the role is creative, you shouldn’t be afraid of important admin and support tasks.

Your nose for a good story will be imperative too, in finding the best ideas and content with “viral potential”. To this end, you’ll also work within the Digital Team to help repackage our great TV content for social media – sometimes editing completely original digital-first narratives too.

Depending on your own ambitions, there are opportunities within production, broadcast operations and even for some on-screen journalism too within the team. There’s even the possibility of occasionally rotating roles with others in the building to make the most of working for Local TV Ltd. – helping to grow your personal skillsets and experience further.

About Local TV Ltd.:

Reaching more than 4 million viewers a month on Freeview, Sky and Virgin Media – Local TV Ltd. (until recently Made Television) has grown dramatically in its 4 years on-air as the premier local broadcaster in the UK. Now on air in eight key cities and regions in England and Wales (Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Liverpool, North Wales, Teesside and Tyne & Wear), we’re breaking new ground both on-air and in the digital space. With a recent overhaul of programming and commercial production, the development of the Local Live format of “rolling localness” and an ongoing rebrand, now is a really exciting time to join the team - you’re sure to be busy!

Key Skills and Requirements:

  • A BJTC/NCTJ or equivalent journalistic qualification, with at least some newsroom experience.
  • Sound working knowledge of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code and current copyright and media law, and impeccable attention to detail.
  • Proven experience in non-linear editing in crafting a narrative through video. Ideally you’ll have edited using Adobe Premiere Pro previously.
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and word processing skills – with respect for the importance of timely and accurate data.
  • You should be a social media native too, aware of current news talking points, the latest viral videos and understanding of why these things are trending and how they might be replicated.
  • An ability to juggle multiple tasks and manage workload and priorities effectively.
  • Great communication skills and an enthusiastic, keen and respectful attitude (just like everyone in our team!)

To apply please submit a cover letter outlining how you’ll be the perfect fit for the role outlined above, as well as your CV and links to past work.
